126 smiling
little faces at
Chester Bowl

Sunday, Jan. 28  was a great day for downhill skiing!  Hardly any wind, cold enough to keep the snow crunchy but enough sun to warm your face.  And there were plenty of faces to warm – 126 smiling little faces to be exact who all came to participate in what has become THE big annual race at Duluth’s Chester Bowl Ski Hill.   What makes this race so special you may ask?  The Kiwanis Club of Friendly Duluth, that’s what!  For the last 37 years our club has donated the necessary funds to purchase real trophies for the Chester Bowl kids.  And because every child to race is a winner…every child got a trophy!  Smiles abounded!!  Kids raised their Kiwanis trophies high over their heads for their proud parents to snap a few shots for the family albums!

When Kiwanians, Keith Johnson and Darren Danielson took to the microphone to begin the awards ceremony, 126 children and all their parents and grandparents erupted with applause and gratitude for our club’s annual support of this great annual event!  Just one more of many ways our club tries to make the world a little better place, one child and one community at a time.

6:00PM    WDIO TV 10 & 13

The auction is progressing.  We have everyone moving forward thinking and PUTTING together creative packages that we can get contracts on.  Remember everyone, please make sure that you are getting those sponsorship dollars in (advertising) for the hour and 1/2 hour spots.  Pat Spott with Orman, Nord and Spott just solidified one of his 1/2 hour slots with a contract for his business.

Again, let's get creative, but let's get contracts.  If you have any concerns about your contracts, please let me know.

April 19, 2008
Kiwanian's - Get all your contract supplies
from Tricia, lets make this year the best ever!!

THE 40TH ANNUAL KIWANIS TV AUCTION IS HERE.
This year's event is scheduled for April 19st at the WDIO studios.

PLEASE get your contracts in early with a few reminders...

1) Get as much information as you can about the product and the company.
Your script writers will love you.

2) TV is a visual medium. If you can not get the actual item to display on the air BE CREATIVE; Get a picture, a color brochure, a company sign, or let our own Karl Spring know he needs to video tape! etc.

Our production costs this year are high. We need to begin the process of securing sponsors for the Auction. In addition to our 1 hour and 1/2 hour slots, we have brought back the best marketing deal west of the Lester River. For $125 an organization, company or individual will receive three (3), yes I said THREE, ten second spots during the broadcast of the Auction.

There is a lot of work to do and we need your help to make this a great event once again. If you have any suggestions, creative ideas or helpful advice, please contact Jason.

Auction Tips and Ideas

When you actually make “the ask”, be as specific and organized as possible to make it easy for people to say yes. People will want to help, especially if you enroll them in the cause and tell them what you need donated. Be compelling -- don’t let “no” discourage you. Try again, asking how they could contribute. Remember the passion and excitement that you bring to the cause will make an impression on the donor you are approaching.

Remember...
The auction is only as good as the items you have to sell.

Don't ignore mom-and-pop businesses. They really count on returning customers, and they really understand the dynamics of word-of-mouth advertising. That's how they survive. They also value community and so can be expected to appreciate the community organization you are working for.

A great time to ask for a donation is while participating in the actual activity yourself.
Now go out there and get some Auction Fever!

WE are still in need of Auction Committee Members!

Tricia knows that people like to wait until the last minute to sign up, but that makes it really difficult to plan.  Here is a list of committees that need SEVERAL people on them. PLEASE SIGN UP!
Tricia will start calling, emailing, pestering beginning next week.  So, if you don’t want to hear her voice, see her emails, get her letters, sign up to help.

Telephones- we need as many as we can get.

Contracts- there are currently 2 on the committee, we need at least 4 more.  This committee keeps track of what contracts are in, what is pending, getting people to get them in, (there could be  treats at the meetings) we will meet 2-3 times before the auction.

40th Anniversary- Carol is the chair, and is working to gather gift certificates for our basket.  She would appreciate any help she could get.

Major Sponsors-
this is how we get our air time paid for, so we need your help. Our first meeting is next Wednesday at 11:30 at the Radisson.

The other scholarship is offered to UMD or CSS medical students through the Andrew Reardon Memorial Scholarship Fund.
