This is the final writing of the
BOWLING FOR DOLLARS
A report of the fun Wednesday nights - by a group of loyal
gentlemen
The "Lilyquist" contingent, Don, Loren and Adam,
a few words are needed to express a sincere thank you to them for many enjoyable hours and
sharing of themselves for our Kiwanis Club.
Loren was the anchor who, although threatening to quit, and
his hatred of bowling, did in fact bowl a perfect game in competition. We had the reminder
each week on the video screens above the lanes. Those pictures could have been in the Post
Office or on a milk carton, nonetheless, he set a standard not many of us will have the
opportunity to attain.
Adam, son of Loren and grandson of Don, was a very welcome
addition for his bowling skills and loyalty to the team, always willing to fill in and
seek others to add to the team. For one year his friend Chris Little was added, and, with
a fingerless delivery and a BIG curve, was a welcomed addition. We will always remember
the 21st birthday celebration and Chris?s smile when asked for ID. Thank you, Adam.
The "old man", Grandpa Don, was always
encouraging and directing all the team, and mostly Adam. I am not sure if the
encouragement was all due to Don, or if Betty (Don?s wife and official cheerleader), had
an affect on the entire team. Thank you Don, Loren, Adam, and of course, Betty.
Don Wendling?s contribution can not be overlooked, whether
it was assisting in the buying of a new home or buying the first round of ?adult
beverages? oft referred to as aiming fluid. Don has been with the team for so many years
that he even remembers bowling at at least 3 other bowling centers. Thank you, Don.
Steve Davis was an ?on one week-off the next? member of the
team. He was always on the phone making a sale while on the way in the door "just is
time", making the balance of the team have heart palpitations. Steve was a
long-standing member of the team and his contributions were always welcomed. Ever wanting
to get home quickly to tuck the kids into bed, Steve, you now do not have to worry about
the "bedtime story". Thank you, Steve.
It would be unfair of me not to thank the
""cookie monster"" Brett Gibson. His cookies, while they do not mix
with ?adult beverages?, filled the gap between a hamburger, waffle fries and a coke, and
were YUMMY. Brett did also bring his cheerleaders with him and I thank them for counting
the strike cup. Brett was on the team for two years, and while in a continual battle for
the highest handicap, never did quite attain that status. Thank you, Brett.
There were others associated with the team over the many
years. Frank Lefevre, known as the "big Frank", with a hook as big as he is, and
fun to be around. Brett Bremberg, an associate of the cookie monster and referred to as
"the other Brett", while only on the team for part of a year, did have to leave
early one day due to a "wardrobe malfunction" of his pants. Ron Olson deserted
the team a couple of years ago to the warmer climate of Arkansas. Corey Collier was on the
team for a year and provided a spark to the team, which was much appreciated. Thank you
Frank, Brett, Ron and Corey.
The definition of an anchor is an item which holds your
position and does this by staying on the bottom, I was that anchor! Thanks to the last
Captain Ron Olson, I was not scheduled to bowl 4 years ago and was appointed the Captain.
Reluctantly I accepted. I did my part to keep up the tradition of the team but with the
difficulty getting and keeping members, it was up to me to dismantle the team, a sad day
for those dedicated men who enjoyed the time we had together and friendships which will be
a part of each of us for years to come, and for those I am ever so thankful.
I do not know of the members of the team over the past 30+
years who had participated, but some of them include Darren Danielson, Tom Simard, and
Andy Reardon. Thank you ever so much for the support of the team these past 30+ years. May
we see you again in a bowling center.
Tom V.
