Presidential Thoughts
Denny Nelson
Summer is
here!!! As we enter this time of year, it would be great to bring a friend to lunch
to help celebrate Kiwanis. This year has been outstanding for membership.
Wayne Johnson and the membership team would enjoy the challenge of increasing our
membership. After this incredible auction year, we need help giving away all that
money!!
Thank
you to Ben Blais for all the great programs! They have all been entertaining and
educational. Keep up the great work Ben!!! We all thank you!
Finally,
our new computer has arrived and is being set up slowly but surely. Tricia has been
working hard to get all her old files back on the computer, with Georges assistance,
it is moving along nicely. Now we have only one challenge
paying for it!
We are going to submit a claim to our insurance to try to recoup some of the cost but we
still have to raise an additional $700. The golf cards are an great way for us to do
that. The web site for the golf cards is:
www.mnpgagolfpartners.com
The
cards are $49.95 each and the club receives $20 from each. So far we have raised
$100 by selling 5 cards. Thank you Bob for your contributions! Please check
out the web site and see how many courses in our area are included. There are over
130 courses across the state/area that you can receive free, discounted, or additional
golf with this card.
Thank
you and have a great month!

For the 29th year, the Area 3 Athletics competition was
hosted in Cloquet, MN. Once again the event was under the auspices of Kiwanis Region
3 Central Cluster. It was held on Saturday, May 17, 2008 at the Cloquet High School track. Area 3 encompasses the following counties,
Koochiching, St. Louis, Itasca, Cook, Lake, Carlton and Pine.
Over 250 athletes and coaches traveled to Cloquet for a day of
competition and camaraderie. Our club was represented by Mike Lamminen and his nephew
Andrew Kolojeski, Karl Howg (Spring) and his children Karly and Gunnar, and Fletcher Koos
along with me. We also had help from prospective member Sara Wright, her husband Eric and
their two sons Garrett and Carter. However, the Port of Duluth Club is making a strong
push to abscond with Sara and have her as a member of their club. Well, at least its
not Rotary!
Other area clubs assisting at the meet were the Spirit Valley Club,
the Port of Duluth Club, the Golden K of Cloquet and the Cloquet Kiwanis Club. We also had
a group from Woodland Hills volunteer and we need to thank Kevin Fawcett for arranging
their help.
Despite having a meteorologist as a volunteer, the weather
interrupted competition a few times early in the day and eventually caused us to shorten
the event. Still we got a lot of the meet in and everyone enjoyed the day. THANK YOU to
all who helped. And remember we will do it again next year the Saturday prior to the
Memorial Day Weekend, so mark your calendars.
George A. Lah
Kiwanian of the Month
Award!
One of our club's newest traditions is the
Kiwanian of the Month award. This monthly award was established in 2008 by Lt.
Governor Barb Fisher to honor the hard work and dedication of Kiwanians throughout the
year. It is designed to encourage Kiwanians to step up and serve their community by
getting involved in our club's activities.
May 2008: George
Lah

Award being presented by
Lt. Governor Barb Fisher
What can we say more about George?
Simply put, he is the truest, most dedicated Kiwanian of us all-! A Past-President
George always greets members at every meeting with a handshake and a big smile; he is
always a lifting spirit for our meetings and keeps the important traditions of our club
alive. We recognized George's unending dedication to the youth of our community through
his work with the Food Drive, Special Olympics, Kiwanis Auction, and more each year and it
does not go without notice! George is such an important part of our club, and
remains a well-respected and important voice of the Kiwanis Club of Friendly
Duluth. As always, thank you George!
