- LOOKING FOR - Volunteers!

At the District Convention in Fargo, clubs collected and packaged
snacks and personal care items for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Over 1250 pounds of
supplies were collected, filling 260 flat rate boxes. Several of the troops wrote and
expressed their gratitude for the project, and it is heartwarming to read their replies.
All District Kiwanians can take pride in the difference we have made in their lives.

Buttoned-down
Bob Newhart to headline convention fun/bigger>/bigger>/bigger>/color>

Newhart, whose career spans several successful television series, 14 feature films, and
millions of albums sold worldwide, is described by the New York Times as the
blandest passenger on the average commuter train
entirely harmless until he opens
his mouth.
From uniquely funny standup bitslike one that explores what would have happened if a
Madison Avenue PR rep had coached Abraham Lincoln on how to handle Gettysburgto his
guest appearances on shows like Desperate Housewives and ER to his own television shows,
Newhart is a true entertainer who promises to keep conventioning Kiwanians thinking even
as theyre laughing.

We had another record breaking year for the ...

Fire Fighter and Police
Officer Recognized
The men honored Wednesday as Duluth's police officer and
firefighter of the year both credit their fathers with setting examples they followed.
"He always said if you're going to commit to doing something, be the best,"
Police Officer Rob Hakala said, referring to his late father.
"We're working at it, Dad."

Its our birthday!
/x-tad-smaller>Wednesday, January 30 marked our 91st birthday.
Here are a few ways we can celebrate throughout the 2008 year:
/x-tad-smaller> Stage an inter-club with Kiwanis clubs in our area. Serve cake and punch and read
excerpts from our Kiwanis rich /x-tad-smaller>history/x-tad-smaller>/color>.
Schedule an event with a newly chartered club or a club in formation. Share
Kiwanis history with its members, as well as some service highlights from the
history of our club.
Invite members of the youth clubs we sponsor to our weekly meeting. Serve
refreshments as a way to recognize them for the valuable contributions they make to our
Kiwanis familys legacy.
Undertake a service project for which our club is well known. This could include
reading to school children, taking baskets of goodies to children living in shelters for
the homeless, cleaning up or refurbishing a playground, the list goes on and on!
Connect through Kiwanis
Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to
changing the world, one child and one community at a time. Join Now!
What is a Kiwanian?
Kiwanis Name
The name Kiwanis means we trade or we share our
talents. It was coined from an American Indian expression, Nunc Kee-wanis.
Kiwanians are volunteers changing the world through service to
children and communities. Kiwanis members help shelter the homeless, feed the hungry,
mentor the disadvantaged, and care for the sick. They develop youth as leaders, build
playgrounds, raise funds for pediatric research, and much more. No problem is too big or
too small. Why? Because working together, members achieve what one person cannot
accomplish alone. When you give a child a chance to learn, experience, dream, and succeed,
great things happen!
As Kiwanis clubs and members, we see it everyday!
Membership
- About 8,000 clubs in 96 countries
- More than 260,000 adult members
- Approximately 320,000 youth
Mission
To serve children of the world.
Service
Each year, clubs:
- Sponsor nearly 150,000 service projects.
- Raise more than $107 million.
Global Results
Members and clubs have contributed more than $80 million toward the global elimination of
iodine deficiency disorders (IDD), the leading preventable cause of mental retardation.
