What is a Kiwanian?

Kiwanis Name
The name “Kiwanis” means “we trade” or “we share our talents.” It was coined from an American Indian expression, Nunc Kee-wanis

Kiwanians are volunteers changing the world through service to children and communities. Kiwanis members help shelter the homeless, feed the hungry, mentor the disadvantaged, and care for the sick. They develop youth as leaders, build playgrounds, raise funds for pediatric research, and much more. No problem is too big or too small. Why? Because working together, members achieve what one person cannot accomplish alone. When you give a child a chance to learn, experience, dream, and succeed, great things happen!

As Kiwanis clubs and members, we see it everyday!

Kiwanis members are guided by these key principles:

Kiwanis Club of Friendly Duluth

The Kiwanis Club of Friendly Duluth was chartered on January 30, 1917 and is affiliated with Kiwanis International with a worldwide membership of 300,000 in over  8,500 clubs in 70 countries.  The oldest club in Minnesota, the Kiwanis Club of Friendly Duluth currently has 135 members.

The Kiwanis Club was formed to be of service to youth, the elderly, the community and the nation.  To fulfill this goal, a partial list of projects the Kiwanis Club of Friendly Duluth is or has been involved in includes:

Salvation Army                    Junior Achievement                   Camp Miller

Cerebral Palsy Ass'n.           Union Gospel Mission              Project SOAR

Duluth School Police            C.H.U.M.                                 Boy Scouts

Girl Scouts                            Y.M.C.A                                Y.W.C.A

The Kiwanis Club of Friendly Duluth has supported the Iodine Deficiency Disorder program, along with Kiwanis International, since 1997.  The object of this program is to eliminate mental retardation in third world countries by supplying them with salt plants that produce iodized salt.

We meet weekly, Wednesday at noon, on the Superior Street level of the Radisson Hotel.

Some of the community service projects we participate in annually are the Paint-A-Thon, the Kiwanis Kite Fly, the Thanksgiving Kiwanis/Rotary Food Drive (which over the past eight years has netted over 500,000 pounds of food for local food shelves) and most recently delivered daffodils for the American Cancer Society.

Our only major fund raiser for the year is the Annual TV Auction, which last year raised over $32,000 and was all donated to the youth and elderly of our area.

Kiwanis History

  • Kiwanis was founded in Detroit, Michigan, on January 21, 1915.
  • In the early years, Kiwanis clubs focused on business networking, but even then, members were serving the needs of the poor.
  • By 1919, the organization had changed its focus from business to service.
  • Kiwanis became an international organization in 1916 with the organization of the Kiwanis Club of Hamilton, Ontario.
  • Kiwanis limited its membership to the United States and Canada until 1962 when worldwide expansion was approved.
  • Until 1987, Kiwanis was a male-only organization. But after years of debate and growing support, women’s membership was received overwhelmingly.
