Thoughts

New Dad.jpg (9777 bytes)A whole month has gone by since we started this Kiwanis Year.
That was fast. Only 11 to go. That's a long time... Many things can happen in 11 months.

• We could get a dozen new members.

• We could raise $30,000 dollars on the auction, and distribute it back to the many needy and worthwhile programs that come to the Kiwanis Club for help.

We could have a very successful food drive.

• We could fly another 1500 kites on another beautiful day in September.

• We could have a Circle K and Key Clubs up and running smoothly.

• We could have successful inter-club programs.

• We can have another exciting tour, like we just had at Cirrus, and a great social event like the 90th Anniversary Party, that is being planned as you read this.

• We can read to lots of kids.

• We can have another year of great weekly programs.

Yes we can have all these things and make this Kiwanis year one we can all be proud of.
All it takes is a little help from a lot of members.
We have a lot of dedicated Kiwanians who have already volunteered to chair or serve on committees, but there's still a need for more hands and heads.
If you have a talent, or see a need, sign up, and help us make this a great year.

Key Club
Jason Malmstrom

This past week the Key Club had their Camp In A Box, which again went over very well. It's a great event that helps to highlight homelessness in the Duluth area. As always, there was a great turnout. The club could really use some additional support from the local Kiwanis clubs so that they can help raise money for the homeless.

Well, winter arrived and then it went away, but because of the early snow the Highway Clean Up project was scratched for the fall, but will be back with force in the spring. It's always good to get out
and get some exercise picking up the highway. The Kiwanis and Key Clubs have the 1 mile stretch of highway located by the Airport Auto dealership north of Duluth on Highway 4. Since both groups are involved, we should really get more people involved.

Also, the group is heading to Fall Convention and is always looking
for volunteers. This convention is a great time to get to know one another and to truly discover the true meaning of being a Key Club Member!

The Great Pumpkin Give Away

Free pumpkins provided by North East Regional Correction Center (NERCC) in cooperation with Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans (MACV- Duluth), Kiwanis Club of Friendly Duluth, and the Salvation Army.  The pumpkins have been grown on the NERCC farm and are being made available for children of families that cannot afford to purchase a pumpkin.

Food%20Drive.gif (62342 bytes)

Once again we are teaming with the Rotary Club #25 to attempt to make this holiday season and life a little better for those in need. With any luck, by the end of this year's food drive we will have surpassed the 500,000 pound mark. That is 250 Tons of Food.

So how can you help? Well, the potato crop at NERC was minimal this year so we are going to have to purchase 10,000 pounds of potatoes this
year. Any financial help we can get from you or your company would be greatly appreciated. For this or for general contributions we accept cash, checks made out to Kiwanis or you can have it added to your Kiwanis bill.

If you would like a tax applicable donation please make a check out to one of the agencies we support. As we get closer to Thanksgiving I will
need some assistance with pickup and delivery of the food. If you can help please contact me.

Finally, if you have any contacts in the food distribution industry,
let me know and we will see if they can assist us.

Celebrate Kiwanis International's
92 birthday in January
... Kiwanis clubs around the world will celebrate the 92nd anniversary of Kiwanis during the week of January 21-27, 2007.  The first Kiwanis club was organized in Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A., and received its state charter on January 21, 1915.

“This is an exciting time to be a Kiwanian,” says Kiwanis International President Nelson Tucker.  “Kiwanis may be 92 years old, but new things are happening in this organization every day and our future is unlimited.  As we celebrate our past, we are looking to the future and our goal of one million Kiwanis members by the 100th anniversary in 2015.”

International Membership
gains 11,000-plus

The official membership numbers for the 2005-06 Kiwanis year are in, and they are impressive.

As of September 30, 2006, the total membership for Kiwanis International is 260,701 members in 8,241 clubs.  This represents an increase of 11,413 members and 124 clubs over the baseline numbers established the previous year, and is the first measurable progress toward our goal of 1 million members.

"This is truly an exciting time to be a Kiwanis member and leader," reports Kiwanis International CEO/Executive Director Rob Parker.

In 2005, Kiwanis established the goal to be 1 million members strong by its 100th anniversary in 2015.  The organization is concentrating efforts on the development and implementation of specific strategic initiatives to achieve overall growth in Kiwanis.

"The regional growth plans for North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Latin American regions, coupled with the 'One Can Make a Difference' marketing campaign, have laid an important foundation for continued future growth," Rob says. "Our commitment to focus on regional growth plans, positive organizational messages, Kiwanis-branded service, K University, and membership growth teams (TAG TEAM), are all examples of the ways we are building momentum.

"As an organization, it is time to celebrate!  We must extend our appreciation to the members who invited new members to join; the clubs that sponsored new Kiwanis clubs; the club presidents, governors, and district leaders for their support and leadership to grow the organization; and the membership growth teams for reenergizing our growth efforts.  We have established a strong foundation and must continue our commitment to achieve 1 million members by 2015."
