Presidential
Thoughts |

It was November 1973, Don Fergeson and I had just
finished a game of racquetball at the Y (we did that once or twice a week). On
the way up to the locker room, he asked me to join him for lunch on Wednesday, he wanted
to introduce me to some of his friends.
So, at
11:30 that Wednesday we walked over to the then Hotel Duluth for lunch. We went thru the
food line and sat at a table with some of his friends
John
Rosen was President, there was an invocation, and we (they) sang the 4th verse of America
the Beautiful. Then I was introduced as a "prospective member". What! Who Me? I
never expected that.
That
was then - - This is now. Last week Jim Berry introduced a new membership recruitment
program and passed out INVITATION cards, asking each member to introduce a prospective
member to lunch. We know there are many Don Fergesons still in our club.
The
holiday season is already upon us and we will be enjoying the music if two of the High
School Choirs, a great time to bring a guest. On Dec 13th we will have our immediate past
Kiwanis District Governor with us. Another good time to bring a guest. Then on the 27th,
we will have our Christmas Party for the kids, a family time for all to come and enjoy.
If you
haven't heard yet, we have a very active committee putting together a 90th Anniversary
Party. Yes our club will be 90 years old in January. You will be getting the formal
invitation soon. You will be hearing more about this every week, I am sure.
In 1917, Kiwanis required 100 members to charter a club. We are now at 89
members.
100 sounds
like a goal to me!

Youth Services
Gary Madison
The Youth Services Committee has been meeting
this fall and passing out alot of money. We started with nearly $25,000 and have awarded
about $20,000 of it to various groups and organizations thus far. This years funding
requests have come from very worthy and excellent causes. We as Kiwanians can be very
proud of the groups we are helping. Attendance at the meetings has been excellent, giving
us good representation from the club.
Good work fellow Kiwanians and Youth Service
Committee members. Wishing all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
