The first three months of our Kiwanis year are behind us and we accomplish a few things.

First, this newsletter will appear on our web site on the first of every month.

Second, we approved over $20,000 to be distributed to youth organizations in the area.

Thanks to Rob Swor, we have had some excellent programs, and more are on the way.

Our 90th Anniversary committee has been busy planning a great event starting with a Banquet at the Kitch on January 26th. Invitations were sent to over 150 Kiwanians and friends of Kiwanis throughout the area and we expect a good turnout to what I promise to be a great event!

We are working hard to update our membership directory but we need your help. Please provide us with your current information so that we can complete this project.

What can be said in
New Year rhymes,
That's not been said
a thousand times?

The new years come,
the old years go,
We know we dream,
we dream we know.

We rise up laughing
with the light,
We lie down weeping
with the night.

We hug the world until
it stings,
We curse it then
and sigh for wings.

We live, we love,
we woo, we wed,
We wreathe our brides,
we sheet our dead.

We laugh, we weep,
we hope, we fear,
And that's the burden
of the year.

Float depicts Kiwanis’
nature of togetherness

The 2007 Kiwanis Rose Parade float
carries the theme,"Together We Can."

The 2007 Kiwanis Rose Parade float carries the theme,

On Monday, January 1, a horse-drawn wagon bearing nature’s bounty and Kiwanis-family members will rumble across a sunflower-lined arch bridge, and more than 150 other television stations worldwide will broadcast the symbolic crossing.

Proclaiming “Together We Can,” the all-flower float is Kiwanis’ entry in the 118th Rose Parade in Pasadena, California. The parade begins at 8 a.m. (PST). Among the list of networks broadcasting the parade live are: HGTV, ABC, NBC, Univision, Travel Channel, and Discovery HD.

Among the Kiwanis float’s passenger list are: International President Nelson Tucker and First Lady Elva; Circle K, Key Club, KIWIN’s, and Special Olympic representatives, as well as Kiwanis dignitaries.

Regarding the 2007 Kiwanis entry, the Kiwanis Club of Rosefloat of Pasadena, California, Web site notes: “Kiwanians are justifiably proud of the enhancement of children's lives, which we provide with our altruistic service for the improvement of our communities. Not only are we saving lives as we have done through our Worldwide Service Project, but making lives better each day, one community at a time, one child at a time.”

Membership gains 11,000-plus

The official membership numbers for the 2005-06 Kiwanis year are in, and they are impressive.

As of September 30, 2006, the total membership for Kiwanis International is 260,701 members in 8,241 clubs. This represents an increase of 11,413 members and 124 clubs over the baseline numbers established the previous year, and is the first measurable progress toward our goal of 1 million members.

"This is truly an exciting time to be a Kiwanis member and leader," reports Kiwanis International CEO/Executive Director Rob Parker.

In 2005, Kiwanis established the goal to be 1 million members strong by its 100th anniversary in 2015. The organization is concentrating efforts on the development and implementation of specific strategic initiatives to achieve overall growth in Kiwanis.

"The regional growth plans for North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Latin American regions, coupled with the 'One Can Make a Difference' marketing campaign, have laid an important foundation for continued future growth," Rob says. "Our commitment to focus on regional growth plans, positive organizational messages, Kiwanis-branded service, K University, and membership growth teams (TAG TEAM), are all examples of the ways we are building momentum.

"As an organization, it is time to celebrate! We must extend our appreciation to the members who invited new members to join; the clubs that sponsored new Kiwanis clubs; the club presidents, governors, and district leaders for their support and leadership to grow the organization; and the membership growth teams for reenergizing our growth efforts. We have established a strong foundation and must continue our commitment to achieve 1 million members by 2015."

92nd Annual
Kiwanis International Convention

Victory in Kazakhstan,
declares Times

The battle against iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) is being fought and won in Kazakhstan, according to a December 16 New York Times article, “In Raising the World’s IQ, the Secret’s in the Salt.” And one of the contributors to the victory, the article notes, is Kiwanis International.

The Times reports that Kiwanis contributed US$80 million to the global fight against the leading preventable cause of mental retardation.

“Largely out of the public eye,” the article underscores, “(Kiwanis, UNICEF, and other partners) made terrific progress: 25 percent of the world’s households consumed iodized salt in 1990. Now, about 66 percent do.”

Kiwanis International has contributed more than $670,000 to Kazakhstan's universal salt iodization program.
