FRIENDS

No matter how long you have been the best of friends; there comes a time when you have a serious disagreement.  Such was the case a few weeks ago with my friend Wally
and I.

Wally and I have been the best of friends for over 40 years, and shared our talents in many projects. Most recently we were working on making some white boards for Carol’s husband Bill when we got into a dispute.

I had laid out the last piece of oak for the frame and he started to cut thru it when I apparently entered his space and he didn't like it one bit.  Oh, I forgot to tell you his full name.  DEWALT 10 " RADIAL ARM SAW.

He bit me; bit me so hard that I had to have surgery to repair the damage.  The surgeon and I had a real good talk, he is a woodworker too, we talked about projects, tools and then safety.

When I got home I realized it was my fault and begged forgiveness, we are again best of friends ready to complete the project. Of course I had to promise to show him the respect he deserves.

This is the perfect for me to THANK  ALL  MY  KIWANIS   FRIENDS for the good wishes for a speedy recovery.  Thanks a lot for the card and the many, many varied comments,  they were much appreciated.

THANKS  AGAIN,

                         Don

Youth Services
Gary Madison

Hello fellow Kiwanians.  Thanks to the Kiwanis Auction and all the help from the Kiwanis Club of Friendly Duluth, the Youth Services Committee was able to dispense nearly $27,000.00 to many local organizations.  Being a part of the Kiwanis organization should make you feel very proud.  You have assisted in helping and making this community a better and caring place.

The Committee was served by Barry Schull, Stephen Collins, Blaire Gagne, Jane Dolter, Cathy Christopherson, Pat Sherman, Jan Swanson, Don LeMar, Mike Lamminen, Kevin Fawcett, and myself. The committee reviewed 42 funding requests for the year.  As a group, all the funding request that were approved followed in the tradition of serving the youth from all different walks of life.  Good work members and we will see you next year.  If any Kiwanians would like to join us next year that would be great.  We typically meet the third Monday of the month, October through March, at noon, in Porters restaurant, Holiday Mall.

Respectfully submitted,
Gary Madison

Show the world your club’s success

Any Kiwanis club can share its success stories with other Kiwanis clubs, while also demonstrating to the world the true meaning of “Kiwanis.”

Simply take one or two action shots from your most successful service, fundraising, membership, or fellowship activity and post them in the Kiwanis In Action section of this Web site.

To participate, you will need to be registered, which requires your club key number and membership identification number. (Inquire of your club secretary if you do not know these numbers.)

And the Kiwanis In Action section is a good place to get ideas from other Kiwanians.

BUS TO SAN ANTONIO

San Antonio is one of our country's truly beautiful and interesting cities--a great place for this summerj's Kiwanis International Convention.  The bus from Minn-Dak to San Antonio would have been great fun, and a great money saver too.  But it appears that the plan is stalled due to lack of interested participants.  Here's another fun, money-saving option:  car-pooling or van-pooling.  Last year, seven Jamestown and Bismarck Kiwanians made the trip to the Montreal convention by van, and it was a delightful way to travel, with great conversation, enthusiastic group singing, and much hilarity along the way.  The trip was as much of a highlight as the convention itself, so we had two very special kinds of fun for the price of one!  Pete Petersen and Barb Egan, your Minn-Dak convention bus coordinators, suggest you try this method of group travel.  We think you'll like it!  Whether by car, van, or plane, it's ON TO SAN ANTONIO for the 92nd annual Kiwanis International Convention, July 3-7!

Governor Springs into Spring

coralyn.jpg (33882 bytes)We are actually in Spring and I’m glad!  While our winters have not been bad these past few years, there is a longing in each of us for the first buds, the first robin and the crocuses that pop up to delight our sight and remind us of the rebirth of our earth.

We’re a little like that as an organization.  We keep busy with our meetings and service, but the winter gets long and sometimes it seems things go a bit stale in our club and committee meetings.  We feel a bit worn, a bit drab and not too excited about trying anything new or different.  But then comes the spring and our hope is renewed and we feel ourselves becoming rejuvenated, refreshed, excited and ready for anything.

That’s what I see is happening in our District right now.  Circle K had their District Convention a few weeks back and elected new officers.  With the former officers pledging their aid, the new officers come with new ideas, excitement aplenty!  What a great organization.  Thanks to the Kiwanians who also came and helped make the Extravaganza evening so much fun!

This weekend, hope is given a boost with the Key Club District Convention in Brainerd with the excitement of being together, planning strategies and electing new officers to govern the organization.  What fun that will be for these students and adults that attend.  Thank you to Governor Elect Bill Daugherty and Immediate Past Governor Stewart Ross who will attend in my stead as I attend co-regional meeting.

So the excitement keeps building with the Region 1 and 2 conference.  I am looking forward to Saturday and seeing old friends, making new ones and seeing who now will step up to the plate in leadership.  Later in the month Region 6 will convene.  I was just informed concerning a new Lt. Governor Elect coming on board!  Hey! Are you getting the feeling that things are happening?

Now, to the clubs.  This is the time that we nominate people for the offices and club board of directors.  Have you gotten together yet?  Are you finding candidates for the positions?  Is the excitement building in your club?  Are you eager to help the Key Clubs, the Circle K’s, the Builder’s Clubs and the K-Kids?  I am!  I’m feeling rejuvenated.  I hope you are, too.
