Presidential Thoughts
Don Lilyquist
Half a Kiwanis year has
come and gone, WOW that went fast!
As I look back over the last 6 or 7 months,
and review all the good things that have happened in our club, it's difficult to
put them in order of importance so I'll just list them in order that they happened.
First, we were able to work with Trisha to keep
her as our Administrative Assistant. What a great job she has, and is doing for our club.
Trisha now has her Weekly Blog that comes to us
every Monday morning and has kept us informed with what's happening.
Then we have our newsletter back, and along
with the Web Site we have great communications with our Club Members and others who are
interested in the activities of Kiwanis.
Rob Swor, how he does it I dont
know? But the programs have been fantastic. Yes he has had help from some of our
members but he deserves a round of applause for all his work,
How about that 90th Anniversary Party? What a
job that committee has done and they are not done yet!
Then last week we held our 39th
Annual T V Auction, Paul and George are to be congratulated for all their work. It
was a great success.
Now whats next? On May 9th our
program is the annual Mayors Prayer Luncheon. This is open to all - So
invite a guest!
In June we plan to work with Park and
Recreation on the annual Schools Out picnic at Bay Front Park. Last year we
cooked and served over 2000 hotdogs, you may want to join in the fun this year.
Ben is planning a Vista Star Luncheon Cruise in
July.
August will be the District Convention in Fargo
and we will have delegates there.
Watch for dates for
Inter-Clubbing, Jonathon will be scheduling a couple more this year.
For the balance of the year we will be putting
emphasis on MEMBERSHIP. We have a great club. Lets share it with others in our
community.
Thanks for your attention,
Don
Auction Update
George Lah and Paul Manning
First
and foremost a Great Big Thank You to
everyone who helped make this years Auction a success. As is the case each year, it
takes a lot of work to put an event of this magnitude together, but with everyone
contributing in their own way it never seems overwhelming. This years final numbers
wont be available until we settle our accounts, but it looks like we will net over
$28,000.
We will be forming an Auction committee/board to help steer us to greater success and many
more years of Auction fun. If you did not or could not help with this years event,
you missed a great opportunity. This is our one major fund raiser of the year and it is a
great deal of fun.
Get involved once and you will be hooked!
Next year is our 40 Annual Auction, lets make it the best yet!

events. Races usually begin around 10:00 AM. We are looking for volunteers for any and all

Youth
Services
Gary Madison
Hello fellow Kiwanians. Thanks to the Kiwanis Auction
and all the help from the Kiwanis Club of Friendly Duluth, the Youth Services Committee
was able to dispense nearly $27,000.00 to many local organizations. Being a part of
the Kiwanis organization should make you feel very proud. You have assisted in
helping and making this community a better and caring place.
The Committee was served by Barry Schull, Stephen Collins, Blaire Gagne, Jane Dolter,
Cathy Christopherson, Pat Sherman, Jan Swanson, Don LeMar, Mike Lamminen, Kevin Fawcett,
and myself. The committee reviewed 42 funding requests for the year. As a
group, all the funding request that were approved followed in the tradition of
serving the youth from all different walks of life. Good work members and we
will see you next year. If any Kiwanians would like to join us next year that would
be great. We typically meet the third Monday of the month, October through
March, at noon, in Porters restaurant, Holiday Mall.
Respectfully submitted,
Gary Madison

to make a difference
This truly is an exciting time to be a part of Kiwanis.
Clubs are increasing their service to children and
communities worldwide and reporting thousands of success stories.
They are building parks, stocking school libraries,
providing scholarships, recognizing elementary school students through Kiwanis
Terrific Kids and Bring Up Grades programs. And more.
There still are children who need our help. The most
effective way to reach these children is through expanding the Kiwanis membership in your
club. Will you accept the challenge? Are you the one to make a difference in your
community?
Make a difference. Change the world one child and one
community at a time.

Anchors
Away!!
I am so
excited to start off on another year of Key Club. This years district theme is
travel, so Key Club is our Passport to Service. Together, throughout the
next twelve months, we will be making a difference in our community, country, and the
world. The journey will no doubt be filled with great times- ICON, Fall Rally,
Spring Convention- as well as some tough obstacles- lower membership, raining on your
event day. But because our district is solid and our will is strong, come the end of
our year-long travels, we will be able to look back and see our success.
Though travel to a
third world country is not in the itinerary, as a district we will still be using our
Passport to Service to make an impact. For the 2007-2008 Key Club year,
we will be raising money to build a school through World Vision. World Vision is a
relief and development organization dedicated to helping children and their communities
worldwide reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty. Children in
countries around the world struggle to study in makeshift classrooms, dilapidated
buildings, or in the open air with no building at all. The resulting danger and discomfort
result in poor lesson quality, poor grades, and high dropout rates. This gift to construct
a school will help provide a permanent, safe learning environment that can benefit
hundreds or even thousands of children for years to come and ultimately build a
stronger community.
I look forward to
serving with all of you while traveling on this amazing trip we have in
store. And I am very excited to actually be traveling with some of you to ICON 2007
(July 10-15, 2207) in Orlando, FL. To those of you who havent registered yet,
it must be done by May 11th. Talk to you lieutenant governors or district
administrators for more information. If you are unable to travel with the district
to International Convention, I encourage all of you to come have a blast at Fall Rally (November
3-4, 2007) in Fargo, ND and then again at Spring Convention (March 28-30, 2008) in Willmar,
MN.
The board would love
to hear ideas of projects you will be doing in the upcoming months. And who knows?
Your idea may show up in newsletters all over Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
We also want to hear what you have been doing with your Kiwanis Clubs. Make it
a club goal this year to build stronger relationships with your sponsoring Kiwanians.
In order to have a
smooth journey this Key Club year, we need strong communication. Clubs can do their
part by sending in their officer contact information to our District Secretary Anna Renner
or their lieutenant governor. And every month, club secretaries should be filling
out monthly reports and point reports online.
If you have any
questions, please feel free to contact me.
In service,
Gretchen Stolhammer,
District Governor
Minnesota-Dakotas District of Key Club International
The first annual World Wide Service
Project, brought many of the 2l clubs in Region 3 together to partner with the Lake
Superior Zoo and their annual Easter Egg Hunt. The various clubs got together over
$800 to help support the zoo that supports our area. We had three of our local Key
Clubs also volunteer at the event and came as theirselves and spent the
morning as many different type of animals.
Clubs
volunteered for service on April 7th were:
Cloquet Golden K, Ely,
Kiwanis Club of Friendly Duluth, Gitche
Gumee, Port of Duluth, Spirit Valley, Superior, as well as East, Denfeld, and Superior Key
Clubs.
The Lake
Superior Zoo also had financial support from Cloquet Noon, Cloqet Golden K, Friendly
Duluth, Port of Duluth, Spirit Valley, Ely, Grand Rapids Noon, Moose Lake, St Cloud
Sunrise, Superior, and Denfeld Key Club.
You could see
some members handing out treat bags for the right colored eggs, some having their picture
taken with the Easter Bunny, some greeting people at the gate and handing out
"Terrific Kids" bookmarks. I think it was fun for all that attended, the
day was cold but the feeling was very warm.
Events in
which you could participate: Hide and find eggs, egg-a-pult, temporary tatoos,
charicture face sketching, craft area - to make bunny ear headware, watch the clowns, and
just roam the zoo and enjoy watching the animals eat from their special Easter treats.
