Can you imagine, Kiwanis International
goals for 2015 is... One Million Members!

How in they expect us to do that? That means that every member would have to recruit ay least one new member. I can live with that.  I must have one friend whom I would like to share the benefits of belonging to a service club like Kiwanis.

What a club we would have if every member recruited one new member!   HOW?  Invite a friend/ prospective member to lunch on a Wednesday as your guest (guest of Kiwanis). Let he or she see what Kiwanis is all about. It’s really that easy. Give it a try!

Last month I forgot to include in my message one major item that we accomplished...

Our Youth Services Committee approved, and distributed $26,000.
To youth organizations in the Duluth Area.
This money was earned as a result of last years auction.

The results of that years auction will exceed that amount.
Many thanks to the many members for the hard work that they put in.

Special Olympics

Saturday May 19, 2007 the annual Area 3 Special Olympics Athletics competition was held in Cloquet, MN. For the 28

th year the event was held under the auspices of the local Kiwanis Clubs. Over 300 athletes and coaches from throughout northeastern Minnesota traveled in for the meet. Despite weather that turned from reasonable to downright cold as the day progressed, it was a very successful day. Clubs represented by volunteers included Cloquet Kiwanis, Cloquet Golden K, Spirit Valley Kiwanis, Port of Duluth Kiwanis and Kiwanis Club of Friendly Duluth. Once again our very own Fletcher Koos was outstanding as the head of the shot put event. Also many thanks to Mike Lamminen and his two nephews for their stellar work at the finish line.

Mark your calendars for 2008. Each year the meet is held on the Saturday between opening fishing weekend and Memorial Day weekend.

Kiwanis a constant in
‘Best Communities for Children’

Thirty-four of this year’s 100 “Best Communities for Children” cited Kiwanis as one reason they are outstanding. The list was chosen by the America's Promice Alliance

Communities were rated on how well they fulfill the Alliance’s “Five Promises to Children”:

  • Caring adults
  • Safe places
  • A healthy start
  • Effective education
  • Opportunities to help others

An Alliance research report indicated that to succeed in life, young people must experience at least four of the five. Kiwanis, Key Club, and other Kiwanis-family groups contribute to all five areas, providing opportunities to serve others in school and community. Another factor was raising awareness of young people’s needs, a prime Kiwanis goal.

“The frequent references to Kiwanis in the winning communities’ applications show our clubs are making a difference for children,” says Kiwanis International President Nelson Tucker. “Every Kiwanian can be proud of this result.”

“These winning communities demonstrate the power and potential when leaders from all sectors— including the terrific civic leadership from members of Kiwanis —join forces to provide young people with the support and opportunities that prepare them for success,” adds Marguerite Kondracke, America’s Promise president and CEO.

KIWANIS magazine dolls up for June

Draw on them, and you can raise a child’s confidence before surgery. Send them off to artists, and you can raise money. A featureless Kiwanis doll appears plain, but in the hands of a child—or an artist—it is a blank canvas of endless possibilities. Read your June KIWANIS magazine to find out how European Kiwanians transformed a host of Kiwanis dolls into works of art—and heaps of money.

Also in that issue, read about the international plight of street children, a colorful—and profitable—dragon boat race in Canada, and how a Kiwanis club’s lifetime of care helped little Romina grow into a strong, young woman.

Have your own story to tell? Post your club’s service, fundraising, fellowship, membership, or leadership success at Kiwanis In Action, and you can share your story with other Kiwanians and KIWANIS magazine.
