WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?

That’s a question that is asked for every transaction, every request and every invitation.
We all asked that when we joined Kiwanis and it will be asked of everyone who will become a new Kiwanian.

• Where else could you meet and greet 50 or more friends weekly and greet each other with a hand shake and a first name greeting.

• Where else could you share a table of food and fellowship every Wednesday noon.

• Where else could you share your good fortunes with friends during our Happy Dollars.

• Where else could you listen to great programs and learn, like we did last Wednesday… Harbor City School’s programs, and outlook for the future.

• Where else could we raises funds to help support over 20 sponsored youth programs so that our children have the opportunity to become better citizens. … Through our T V Auction, 40 years old in 2008, If that is not enough, we Kiwanians also sponsor "School’s Out Picnic in June, and the Family Kite Fly in September.

• And now we are now in the process of expanding our membership so that we can provide more services, especially to the children.  Thanks to your help we have 35 names to add to our prospective member list, and within the next few weeks we will be inviting them to check us out.

• Where else could you be involved as a volunteer, dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time? . … The Kiwanis Club of Friendly Duluth!

THAT’S WHATS IN IT FOR ME!

Fall is in the air and Food is on my mind…

It is not too early to start thinking about our annual Holiday Food Drive in conjunction with Rotary Club # 25. Since 1993 our two clubs have procured over 500,000 lbs. of food and over $23,000 for the agencies that serve the less fortunate of our community. In a perfect world, everybody would have enough to eat everyday. Our world, unfortunately is not perfect. So that’s where we come in. Each year we contact a number of agencies to determine what their needs are for the holiday season. We then find a way to get them what they need at a lower cost then they typically pay. We do this through creative thinking, hard work and generosity.

What can you do to help? Well, we are always looking for sources of low cost or donated commodities. We are also looking for creative ways to generate funds to purchase these commodities. And we ask that you be generous with your own contributions. As a team we can do wondrous things. Please contact George Lah if you have any questions or suggestions. We have passed the ˝ million pound mark-Let’s get on our way to a full million.

George A. Lah

The Northland Foundation

Is currently in the process of recruiting mentors for the KIDS PLUS Youth Leadership Academy.  Part of that process is the recruitment of a diverse cross section of community members who bring something different to our leadership group.
We would appreciate your assistance in helping us find people who value youth and the future of our upcoming community members and leaders.
Please consider adding our information to your newsletter or attaching our information to an e-mail to help ensure that quality individuals will be found to continue this successful program.  We also would be willing to present to your group in person if requested.

If you have any questions please feel free to call Shari McCorison or Jan Amys at the Northland Foundation @ 723-4040.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Urgency marks renewed call for disaster-relief funds

The earthquake that shook Peru and the hurricane that pounded Jamaica and the Yucatán Peninsula have prompted the Kiwanis International Foundation to issue a special request for contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund.

“The Foundation has received numerous messages of concern for the well-being of those affected by Hurricane Dean and the earthquakes in Peru,” notes Foundation Executive Director John Sloan. “As a result, we’ve decided to seek donations for the Disaster Relief Fund, particularly for children who are most affected.”

Working with clubs within the affected areas, the Foundation will make sure contributions are directed to children with the most immediate and critical needs.

If you want to support the relief efforts, you can contribute online or send your support to the Kiwanis International Foundation Disaster Relief Fund, 3636 Woodview Trace, Indianapolis, Indiana, USA 46268.

“Our thoughts are with the countless individuals suffering because of these natural disasters,” John stresses. “Please join us in serving children who are truly the most innocent victims of mother nature.”

Award speaks volumes about
Kiwanis reading program

Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) will honor Kiwanis International during its third annual Gift of Reading Awards Gala in September. Also being recognized are the Washington Post and Verizon.

“This year’s RIF Gift of Reading Award winners have made significant contributions to fostering a culture of literacy and educational achievement in the United States,” says Carol H. Rasco, RIF president and CEO. “We are grateful for their support and look forward to presenting them their awards at the Gala.”

Kiwanis International is being cited for its annual Read Around The World program, support of local RIF programs in the US, and Kiwanis-club projects that address child literacy in fun and creative ways.  Launched in 2001, Read Around the World is Kiwanis’ most popular annual service program. This past year, almost 2,000 Kiwanis-family clubs conducted Read Around the World projects. Reading Is Fundamental motivates children to read by working with them, their parents, and community members to make reading a fun and beneficial part of everyday life. RIF’s highest priority is reaching underserved children from birth to age 8. Many Kiwanis clubs have supported RIF programs since the organization was founded in 1966.
